Sapienza University of Rome was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII. It is the first University in Rome and the largest University in Europe. With over 700 years of history and 145,000 students (including 7.000 foreign students), Sapienza has more than 4.500 professors and 5.000 administrative and technical staff. The University offers a wide choice of courses including over 300 degree programs and 250 first and second level specialised qualifications.

With its 23 faculties, 112 departments and 30 centres devoted to scientific research, Sapienza plans and carries out important scientific investigations in almost all disciplines, achieving high-standard results both on a national and international level. There are also more than 150 PhD programmes which include almost all major fields of knowledge. This institution is a leading centre of research and academic excellence in all fields of knowledge and is highly involved in the development of society through research, higher level of education and international cooperation.

The university has improved its research programmes in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, biomedical sciences and humanities through the "Sapienza Innovation" programme. Recent cooperation with major British and American universities has resulted in scholarships for Sapienza students through large multicultural exchange programmes for many faculties.
